What do I need to set up a Reference Series turntable?
Perhaps the biggest difference in setup for our Reference turntables (RT82, RT83, RT84, RT85) is the need for an external preamp.
This allows for a pure signal path from the stylus through the turntable rather than running through an internal preamp or a bypass, giving you higher quality audio.
With this option comes a few additional setup steps, including grounding both the turntable to the preamp and the amplifier to your receiver or powered speakers.
If your amplifier or speakers have a PHONO input, there is likely a preamp built into that input and an external preamp should not be used.
A basic Reference turntable rig will be set up as shown in the image below:
