What is the difference between a preamp and an amplifier?
Preamp:
The purpose of a preamp is to boost the low phono signal of the turntable to "Line Level" which allows an amplifier to pass the sound to the speakers. A preamp or a turntable with a built-in preamp will not connect directly to passive speakers such as SX6, XL8S, or HFS. It can be connected directly to our powered speakers which include Ai41, Ai61, and Ai81.
Amplifier/Receiver:
Connects to various audio sources such as a turntable or preamp and powers passive speakers such as our Elite/Reference/Signature Series Speakers which are connected with speaker wire.
